Juvenile Ball Python, Approx. Less than a year old
Ball pythons (Python regius) are the most popular pet snake in the world — and with good reason. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, they are known for their docile temperament, manageable adult size, and extraordinary variety of color and pattern morphs. A well-cared-for ball python can live 25–40 years, making them a genuine long-term companion.
They earn their name from their defensive behavior: when threatened, they curl into a tight ball with their head tucked at the center. In a calm home environment, this behavior is rarely seen. Ball pythons are generally slow-moving, curious, and tolerant of gentle handling — making them an excellent first snake for most keepers.
Ball pythons are terrestrial and semi-fossorial — they spend most of their time on the ground or inside burrows. A properly sized, secure enclosure with excellent thermal gradients and humidity control is the foundation of good ball python husbandry.
